Colonel Harland David Sanders was an American businessman, best known for fast-food chicken restaurant chain Kentucky Fried Chicken and later acting as the company’s brand ambassador and symbol. Colonel Sanders, the fried chicken magnate, who seems in public to be as jolly and serene as Santa Claus, is one of the world’s foremost worriers. This Founder of KFC was born in Henryville, Indiana, the U.S. on September 9, 1890. The struggle started from the very beginning of his life as his father died when he was only five. After his mother remarried, his family relocated to Greenwood, Indiana, but being unable to get along with stepfather.

He left home and started working as a farmhand and horse carriage painter. (1) He dropped out of school after seventh grade (1) as he finds algebra too difficult. Then he persuaded to several different jobs – He worked as a streetcar conductor, Rail line Fireman, Insurance salesman, steamboat operator, tire seller and lawyer. At one point his first wife Josephine King left him up with children. He was appointed as secretary of the Indiana Chamber of Commerce but resigned. He cashed his share to finding an acetylene lamp manufacturing company, but that flopped.(3)

In 1930, he began operating a service station for the shell oil company in Corbin, Kentucky. He began to cook and serve chicken, Ham and steaks to his customers (3) living in quarters nearby. By 1935, the Corby service station became famous for his famous Kentucky Fried Chicken which he prepared using his secret spices. The governor of Kentucky loved his fried chicken so much that he rewarded Harland with Colonel designation. Due to construction of a Highway he had to close his restaurant as per govt. Order. Then he joined a cafe from where he got only 105$ at the time of his retirement. The amount was too little was that he was mentally completely broken down. But he didn’t lose hope and went with his unique recipe and a pressure cooker to do marketing of his unique recipe. He visits different restaurants, but everyone rejected him. He was rejected around 1009 times. At length, one owner agreed. In 1939, he bought a motel in Asheville, North Carolina. During World War 2, gas was rationed, and as the number of customers dwindled so, he closed the motel. He worked as a restaurant supervisor in Seattle until the end of 1942. However, after many more such struggles, KFC became a pioneer food chain to expand Internationally. Today KFC or Kentucky Fried Chicken is one more than 118 countries all over. He died in Louisville, Kentucky U.S. on December 16, 1980, at the age of 90. He was smiling cheerful face can be a great inspiration for all of us
